The Goonies (1985), is an adventure comedy film co-produced and directed by Richard Donner from a screenplay by Chris Columbus, based on a story by executive producer Steven Spielberg.
In the film, a group of kids living in the Goon Docks neighborhood of Astoria, Oregon, try to save their house from foreclosure. In the process, they discover an old treasure map that leads them on an adventure to find the lost fortune of One-Eyed Willy, a legendary 17th-century pirate.
In addition to the cast, director Richard Donner, producer Steven Spielberg, and screenwriter Chris Columbus were also in attendance, and even Cyndi Lauper made an appearance.
On December 5, 2020, there was another virtual cast reunion, this time for a live reading of the full script, which was broadcast on various social media channels. The magnificent Queen Anne-style home was built in real life by millionaire Columbia River bar pilot Captain George Flavel and is now on the National Register of Historic Places.
To celebrate the 25th anniversary of The Goonies in 2010, the manager decided to make strawberry milkshakes, like the one Chunk crashed through the window next to the slice of pizza.
Tourism is now Astoria's main source of income, they told me, as they stood next to replicas of the Goonies treasure map, $50 sloth masks and Baby Ruth chocolates. You may remember that in the opening scene, the chase ends on the beach, where the Fratelli's Jeep Cherokee gets away in a race of similar vehicles.
Well, you can't drive it, on the other hand, you'll enjoy racing across the vast, wild sands of Cannon Beach, where the scene was shot, 25 miles south of Astoria.
Cyndi Lauper co-wrote the song Goonies R Good Enough and, in one of the strangest contexts, directed a 12-minute, two-part music video that includes a cameo by Steven Spielberg, the film's executive producer.
At one point, rocks fall from the ceiling and Data is heard saying Holy S-H-I-T. This is because the actor who played Data, Jonathan Ke Quan, promised their mother not to use profanity in the film.
In the scene where Chunk calls the police, the cop is naturally skeptical and asks Chunk if this is like when there were creatures that multiplied when you poured water on them.
The Goonies was a 1985 film directed by Richard Donner about a group of adventurous kids who discover an old pirate map and follow it to an underground cave in search of treasure to save their home.
After playing the unforgettable master of the Truffle Shuffle Cohen went on to star in several films and television shows, including Family Ties and Wonderful World of Disney.
Starring Sean Astin, Josh Brolin, Corey Feldman, Jeff Cohen, Maggie Green, Jonathan Ke Quan, Martha Plimpton, Joey Pantoliano, Robert Davi and Anne Ramsay, The Goonies is over 35 years old!
In the final week of filming, director Richard Donner noticed that the cast were starting to come across as a bit cold and distant to him.
In 2017's Lego Dimensions, a Goonies-based level was released. Excalibur Batman narrates the story and tries to give Sloth a bat suit to wear, and then Chunk and Sloth set off in search of the other Goonies in the caves to save them from the evil Fratellis.
At the end of the movie, when a couple of cops take off on quads, the grizzled man is played by none other than Richard Donner, the film's director.
